Week 5 – 2018

I cannot believe how far behind I have gotten. This has to be a new record. I only have a short time before running off to book club (a second one for the day). Week 5 covers January 29 – February 4. As always, your feedback is encouraged.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark – I borrowed this as an e-book from the Boston Public Library. This had been on my to read list for a really long time. It is definitely worth the read. It tells the story of a teacher at a girls’ school in Edinburgh. She has unconventional teaching methods and she selects her favorites and basically encourages them in critical thinking. This was not the thing at the time and the headmistress is constantly trying to find a way to be rid of Miss Jean Brodie. This may not translate well to the current era, but I think it must have been pretty advanced for its time. It is so short it’s hard not to recommend this to everyone. I’m giving it 3 stars.

The Sunshine Sisters by Jane Green – I received this as an e-book from the publisher via NetGalley. I really enjoyed this once I got into it. It’s the story of a highly self-absorbed actress and how that affects her 3 daughters. It’s quite engaging once the daughters get past childhood. I also really like this author’s books so I stuck with it despite the slow start. I’m glad that I did. If you like books in this genre, definitely give it a go. I’m giving it 4 stars.

The Idea of You by Amanda Prowse – I received this as an e-book from the publisher via NetGalley. This totally sucked me in. I basically read the entire thing in one go. The characters were quite easy to relate to. The sadness of their struggle with infertility was so real and well written. I felt like I was there with them, sharing their pain and frustrations, but also their continued hope for the future. When the teen daughter moves in for the summer, their lives change drastically. It’s a compelling read. I definitely recommend it. I’m giving it 4 stars.

And that’s it for Week 5. And now I need to run to book club…. And I can’t figure out how to do the tags today, so this is it.
